Spain disputed the boundaries of the vast Louisiana Territory and viewed the Lewis and Clark expedition as an illegal trespass onto its lands. The Spanish also feared America’s control of gold- and mineral-rich territories. Hundreds of Spanish troops were dispatched from Sante Fe on four different missions to intercept the explorers and bring them back in chains. They nearly caught up with the explorers twice but eventually lost them in the vast wilderness.
