Test Your Knowledge of the Lewis and Clark Expedition

Conditions along the 8,000-mile expedition route were nothing short of grueling. The explorers faced extreme hot and cold temperatures; torrential rains, hailstorms, and deep snowpacks; steep mountain passes, dangerous rapids, and treacherous terrain; starvation, wild animal encounters, and disease. Despite these life-threatening challenges only one member of the Corps lost his life on the journey – Sgt. Charles Floyd.

Floyd was a family friend of William Clark, and only 21 years old when he joined the expedition. After proving himself to be dependable, knowledgeable, and responsible, he was soon promoted to sergeant. In late July 1804, Floyd fell ill, unaware he was probably suffering from a ruptured appendix. He continued up the Missouri River with the crew until he finally succumbed to his illness on August 20. Floyd was buried on a hill overlooking the river near present day Sioux City, Iowa.
